DAVID laser scanner is a system for contact-free scanning of 3d objects. Try DAVID, a free and easy-to-use software for low-cost 3D laser scanning! The only hardware requirements are a simple commercial hand-held laser and a standard camera.
Compatible to most cameras with Microsoft Windows drivers (WDM):
You can use nearly every MS-Windows compatible camera with WDM support, like your web-cam or fire-wire camera. You can even use your camcorder if you can connect it to your PC (and if you have suitable WDM drivers).
Data smoothing and interpolation:
By moving the laser like a paintbrush, you can sweep over the object until the scan results are smooth and all gaps are filled. Beside that, you can use the gap interpolation and smoothing filters of DAVID to refine your scans.
Texture support: You can grab a camera shot that will be used as texture. The texturized 3d model can be inspected in the 3d window. Furthermore DAVID exports texture coordinates, which allows you to import the textured object in third-party software.
Save your scanned object as Alias Wavefront OBJ file. The OBJ-format is an well-established plain text format for triangle meshes and is supported by many 3d applications. (Further file formats can be exported with DAVID-Shapefusion.)
PC: with Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 (32/64 bit) and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher
Laser: Any light source that creates a very thin but bright light plane. A 10-Euro Laser-Level from a home improvement store will be sufficient in many cases, but a focusable laser gives more accurate results.
Camera: Although the scanner will work with a cheap webcam, of course you will obtain better results with high quality cameras. Color is only necessary if you want to get a colored texture. Otherwise, you may even get better results with a grayscale camera. The camera MUST come with WDM / DirectShow drivers.
Calibration Corner: You need a Calibration Corner for calibration of the camera and as background structure during scanning. It must consist of two plain walls / boards which stand in an angle of exactly 90?. For camera calibration, you can find a calibration pattern in the DAVID directory, which you should print out and glue onto the walls / boards.
